I applied in July 2013 to become International marketing Manager for Strava. I was part of the final 3 candidates for interviews in San Francisco.
Feeling strong until the end, I didn’t win that race and must admit that another contender was more experienced and better qualified than me for the job, and he got it. Kudos to him!
KNOWING THE WHAT AND THE HOW
There can be a handful of individuals at most who are as well versed in the combined European and North American trail running scenes than Mr. Gaffuri. He knows the people, the products, the places, and the races on both sides of the Atlantic. Aside from knowing the “what” of trail running marketing, he knows the how. Not only has Martin made headway in traditional printed media, he is extremely knowledgeable regarding social media. Ok, that was an understatement. Martin is at the forefront of social media. He knows the most popular social media platforms in both the US and Europe, has researched many others, and has personally sought to advance the intersection of athletics and social media.
In his personal ventures, I’ve seen Martin show great judgment. He vigilantly researches possible courses of action and ways to pursue them. He maps out a logical plan of action and then follows it; however, he decisively changes course as soon as it becomes clear than the chosen path is not the ideal path. This ability to react to additional information and changing realities is, in my mind, one of Martin’s greatest attributes.
On a personal side, I would be delighted to have the opportunity to work with Martin. At the 2008 TransRockies Run, he and I worked more closely than I ever have with another person. He quickly went from being a teammate to a brother.

WORLDWIDE TRAIL RUNNING ADVOCATE
I strongly recommend Martin Gaffuri for the position of Director of International Marketing at Strava. Martin is an enthusiastic proponent of running and all athletic endeavours. I have known him since he interviewed me for an article in runner’s World (France) about my trail running and specifically about the Kilimanjaro Stage Run event that I and my company organise.
He worked tirelessly to do the interview and prepare the materials, and collect the photos, all on a very short notice. Since then he continues to be huge advocate of trail running worldwide and specifically in Africa and Tanzania. He has helped us with successfully promoting the Stage Run in France and Europe through his GoodPeopleRun website and social media resources.
He would make an excellent marketing director for Europe with his broad international experience, enthusiasm, market knowledge.
THINK AROUND CORNERS
Martin has a huge engine in his brain as well as his body — he can “think around corners” and see opportunities and connections where others can’t. He’s also great to work with and universally loved — handy interpersonal attributes that are hard to find. I hope to be working with him a long, long time, regardless of his position.
Owner at Outside PR
Martin has a palpable passion for technology and athletics. I met Martin a few times while he was visiting California for some of the more historic trail ultra running races. We spoke about running, technology, and the friends that connect us through those activities.
At the time, I had a few iOS apps in the store that helped runners train for running races. As I got to know Martin at these trail races, I came to learn that he was also working towards launching a tech startup that helped runners meet up and go on runs together. His site, GoodPeopleRun, intended to literally connect the good people of the world who like to head out on runs with other like minded folks. A noble capitalist pursuit.
I learned of Martin’s background working with some of the larger athletic brands, and was impressed with his many deep connections. Over a two year period, Martin would split his time between Europe and the Bay Area, as he sought to get his company off the ground. Every time we met up, I continued to be impressed with Martin’s relentless optimism and pursuit of his dream to make an impact in the digital endurance sports space.
Martin is not only a trail runner who can run with the best in the world, he’s also a budding entrepreneur who will undoubtably make an impact wherever he chooses to direct his boundless energy and passion for the business of athletics.
WORK ETHIC, ATTITUDE AND JOIE DE VIVRE
I first met Martin at the TransRockies Run in Colorado in 2009. Apart from running fast and being a tough, but fair, competitor, I was instantly struck by social he was. I think he made me and everyone around us, laugh from our first conversation.
We have since become good friends. I have an incredible amount of respect for his work ethic, attitude and joie de vivre. He not only has big ideas, he also has that rare quality of being able to see them through. He has an incredible passion for sport that shines through your interactions with him.
His energy, skill set and personality would make him an ideal fit for Strava.

BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS ALL OVER THE WORLD
I have known Martin for years through time visiting with him in Europe and the US. I have witnessed his passion and strong work ethic towards running, GoodPeopleRun and trail stewardship. His vision, brand, & energy had me stoked for GoodPeopleRun the very first time I met him. He’s clever, funny, creative and just a great guy to be around. He is an integral part of the running community internationally with friends and business relationships all over the world. I believe anything he puts his work ethic to will grow and become better because of this man. Strava seams like the perfect fit for him and I would highly recommend him for the Director of International Marketing.
I first met Martin in Boulder, Colorado – I was travelling to different parts of the world to experience the different types of running training. He immediately grabbed my attention with his amazing “buzz” is the way I can best describe it, so passionate and driven about everything he does. When he believes in something including a brand he does not let anything get in the way from him promoting it and get others to believe and share the same passion.
I don’t think I need to say that much more about Martin because as soon as you meet him and interview him you will see his positive, passionate, caring and giving nature. You will see how well he can build rapport with anyone, how he makes you excited about what he is telling you about and how you want to learn more from him.
He has a exceptional network of people behind him and whenever I need to know or need anything relating to endurance sports, Martin is a key person I turn to and I am always impressed with his feedback and speedy replies.
Not only the above but he is also an exceptional athlete himself so he knows what endurance athletes look for and strive for in their sport.

VISION OF SPORT SERVICES
I have known Martin since he first worked for Salomon in 2006, and followed up with him when he started GoodPeopleRun. Martin stood out by his passion for sports in general, his skills on social media, his sense of entrepreneurship and his vision on the impact of sports services business wise, and marketing wise.
I believe Strava can only benefit from his experience in digital and I highly recommend him to you for the International Marketing Director position.

As an entrepreneur, Martin has demonstrated creativity, leadership and a real ability to make things happen. His sharp business skills, his understanding of users and customers, make him an ideal marketing executive in the area of sporting goods and services. Co-founder & CEO, MobiSystème
Martin’s professionalism, expertise, enthusiasm and social networking nouse would be a huge asset to Strava. He has a clinical understanding of how runners, cyclists and outdoor sports people interact and what they expect when it comes to logging their data and sharing their sporting experiences digitally. Martin’s exploits as a runner will also give him understanding and insight from a sporting perspective too and my feeling is that he would make an outstanding Director of International Marketing for Strava.

STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL LEVEL
I Regis Herrgott as Footwear Product Line Manager at Lafuma, strongly recommend Martin GAFFURI for the position of Director of International Marketing Director at Strava.
Martin has always shown deep interest and strong knowledge of the running market from being out on the field snooping around for new products, trends and raising events, he would then discuss with his personal network and through social media.
This is why I feel Strava could really benefit from his ability to be efficient at both strategic and operational levels, on a market he’s been part of for over 7 years.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT
Hereby I would like to mention how our relationship has been positive. I have particularly appreciated your deep involvement into our association. I consider that you are a hard worker with an entrepreneurial spirit which is particularly adapted to the position of International Marketing Director at Strava.
GEEK IS THE NEW COOL
I had the opportunity to work with Martin on his last project, GoodPeopleRun. He had as excellent and deep knowledge of marketing, especially in web/mobile/social medias oriented environments, in the running/race fields. People are listening to him as he listens to them.
He is always up and motivated. I’ve been really impressed with his maturity and his creative abilities. Martin is a hands-on marketing leader with an entrepreneurship spirit, no doubts !
I would strongly recommend him for a job in marketing management with responsibilities.
RUNNING TO CYCLING
Martin and I go way back. As a friend I can attest that his motivation, endless positive attitude are very unique and valuable to both people and companies.
As a professional of the cycling industry I am confident that his entrepreneurial experience in developing a social network for runners and by the way I see him pick up and process information, will quickly help him to become as good on the cycling market as he is on the running/trail running one.
MATURITY THROUGH EXPERIENCE
I have known Martin through the development of his startup Goodpeoplerun.com, as an advisor. At a first glance, he appeared like a strong willed individual with a very enthusiastic and dynamic attitude which happened to be true as we carried on working together. This entrepreneurial experience taught him to channel this energy and master his full on attitude. He is now able to focus on priorities, step back to make strategic decisions and keep pushing hard when extra effort was required. I personally really enjoyed see him grow personally and professionally through this experience. He is a very talented young man and I wish him to carry on putting his talent, skills and heart in a company he believes in.
